The title of this novel is "Emma." It is just her name, nothing more. On the cover of the novel is a portrait of Emma as well. So far in the novel, we learn that Emma is somewhat self-centered, and perfect in her father's eyes. Emma is a beautiful girl, and she knows that, and she thinks she can do no wrong. She uses this mentality when playing matchmaker. Instead of having the best interest of the two she is setting up, she is thinking about what she wants best. For example, Harriet receives a proposal from Mr. Martin. She is very excited and speaks very highly of Mr. Martin, until Emma convinces her to reject his proposal. Emma has it set in her mind that she will marry Mr. Elton. However, we learn in Chapter 10, Mr. Elton is not catching onto Emma's plan, and is simply not interested in Harriet in the loving way Emma wishes. She realizes she has tried too hard, and the outcome is not at all as she wishes. She then goes to blame Mr. Elton for the problem by calling him "proud, assuming, conceited; very full of his own claims, and little concerned about the feelings of others." Instead of recognizing her own mistakes, she is quick to put the blame on others. Like her father said earlier, Emma can never do any wrong. She is self centered, just as the title gives off. Emma.
